Are you in the mood for an authentic slice of pizza? Delicious, juicy, mouth watering, freshly baked Italian pizza. A large piece of thin crispy base loaded with cheese and toppings of your choice. Do you just love meat? Go for pepperoni and beef and mushroom. Are you a vegetarian? Pick spinach and ricotta cheese… Artichokes, tomatoes, peppers, bacon, mozzarella cheese… There is a lot to choose from. You can only get this kind of pizza in Little Italy downtown San Diego.

That’s where James and I recently headed on a Saturday afternoon. We parked the car on one of the side streets (I know, driving and parking downtown San Diego can be a pain, but it wasn’t too bad as it was still early in the day), and we walked hand-in-hand through the streets of this enticing neighbourhood.
We slowly passed a charming little square with a fountain in the middle, surrounded by white chairs and tables; people scattered around. Someone reading a book; someone focused on text messages; and someone just sitting there, people-watching.

We passed a few cafes and restaurants. I love how they put tables out on the sidewalks in summer. I love passing diners getting a fraction of their conversations. You get to experience the city and its neighbourhoods to the full extent. You hear the hum of people talking and clinking of the dishes, the air is warm and smells like summer, the tablecloths are sparkly white and you know everything is ok… That’s what it was like in Little Italy that particular Saturday afternoon. It wasn’t very loud or busy, just a lazy summer day reluctantly coming to an end.

We arrived at the restaurant, placed our order and moved to the back patio with our drinks (a cold refreshing beer and a glass of white wine). We only took a few pictures before the hot pizza slices were in front of us. We sat, and talked and ate and drank and laughed, talked some more and took more pictures.
What a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon with your loved one…
